Wednesday, March 31st:
A PC game I have been addicted to for almost a year now is finally in open beta, which means that anyone and everyone has the chance to try it out today!
The game? Heroes of Newerth. Well, what exactly is this, and is it worth your time?
Here is the lowdown:
Heroes of Newerth, designed by S2 Games, is a team based RTS (real time strategy) game based off a popular custom game that was made using the Warcraft 3 engine years ago, DotA. Therefore, if you are familiar at all with DotA, you will be able to transition easily into HoN.
The premise of the game is simple: Each team is made up of 5 members and represents either the Legion or Hellbourne side (bottom left / top right of the game map, respectively) with the goal of destroying the other team's defensive towers and pushing into their base to destroy their main citadel. Each player is represented by a unique hero, whom they can currently pick from among 60 different choices. The heroes level up, learn unique individual skills, buy equipment to power up, and clash with the enemy's heroes. As the beta progresses and the game launches into retail, S2 plans to continue adding more heroes to the pool to keep things exciting and the metagame shifting around. Also, another great thing about this game is that each match tends to run anywhere from 15-45 mins. Thus, it is the perfect way to enjoy yourself without having to commit a ridiculous amount of time, unless you want to play multiple matches of course, and you will!
Fortunately, with the open beta S2 has also released a patch with a very excellent tutorial system for those interested in learning exactly how to play this game. It is sort of like chess, in that it is easy to learn, and tough to master (but completely possible!) Visit http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/ to sign up for your free beta account and start playing.
